ASSIGNMENT #2 BLOG POST

I have found this assignment to be more beneficial to me as we learnt how to use many new functions of the internet, all of which I haven't heard of before.
We have continued to use our Fllickr and Del.icio.us sites and continued to manage them and add more photo's and bookmarks. I have also created a larger network of contacts on my Del.icio.us account and my Flickr. I now have over 30 photo on Flickr of my friends and family, as well as things I found of interest. I found Del.icio.us to be really useful since I created an account. I have used it to save pages when doing a huge essay, and this made referencing really easy! I also saved pages that I use all the time and I know if I use a different computer then I can still access these sites.
I have also played around with the look of my blog, changed colours and fonts etc... to find a look that suited my blog and kept it looking tidy etc...
I have also claimed my blog with Technorati, and added a badge to my blog. I have looked at my rank and authority over the weeks to see how it has changed. Didn't really understand this at first but have a rough idea now.
I have also added a RSS feed to show my del.icio.us links and this was something I had never heard of before but found it interestng in how it updates itself automatically.
To keep track of visitors I have used Sitemeter and only added this recently so my visits are pretty low, as far as I can tell they are uni people who have visited and they don't stay long : (.
I also like learning how to take a snapshot of a webpage, I think i will use this a lot now that I know how to do it!
All in all I have found this assesment to challenge my knowledge of the internet and everything that I learnt was something I had never learnt before so it was very beneficial!

Week 12- Tweaking Templates

I did have a look at webmonkey and did find some new colours that were'nt in Blogger already. I kept to a basic blog template as I felt it worked well for me and kept my posts and side bar tidy. The colours and fonts I used were chosen as I thought they went well together and all in all were aesthetically pleasing. I tried to keep the green colour in the header the same as my links with the grey as a secondary colour. I am quite happy with the overall look of my blog.

Week 10- Technorati

Technorati is an Internet search engine for searching blogs, competing with Google, Yahoo and IceRocket. Technorati Rank is calculated based on how far you are from the top. The blog with the hightest Technorati Authority is the #1 ranked blog. The smaller your Technorati Rank, the closer you are to the top. The best way to increase your Technorati Authority is to write things that are interesting to other bloggers so they'll link to you. Linking to source material when you blog is also a great way to engage in conversation and help others find what you find interesting.

Week 9- Form & Content

WEBMONKEY v SPORTSGIRL

These two screenshots are of webmonkey and sportsgirl . I find the sportsgirl website to be aesthetically pleasing, easy to navigate, fun with a good use of colours. Webmonkey, on the other hand, I find to be disgusting as there are too many elelments, discusting colours and background and a lot of uneccessary elements that makes it hard to navigate and read.

What is aesthetics?

Aesthetics refers to how 'visually pleasing' a design is- It is designed to give pleasure through beauty- it has a pleasing appearance. Aethetics is usually subjective, according to opinion, although the aesthetics of design have been studied and some principals and elements of design are definantely objective.

Week 8- RSS

RSS is an XML-based format (using the Resource Description Framework (RDF) - a language for representing information about resources in the World Wide Web) that allows the syndication of lists of hyperlinks, along with other information, or metadata, that helps viewers decide whether they want to follow the link. RSS allows a person's computer to fetch and understand the information, so that all of the lists that person is interested in can be tracked and personalized for them.
Rss is important because-
-A Hot Fix for Info-Junkies
-RSS Feeds are the Better Email Newsletters
Rss is an extremely efficient way to syndicate content. For web browsers, Rss is a way to regain control of their online experience. Users can have a better focus on the content by avoiding distractions such as pop-up advertisements and email spam.

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a W3C initiative that allows information and services to be encoded with meaningful structure and semantics that computers and humans can understand. XML is great for information exchange, and can easily be extended to include user-specified and industry-specified tags.
